Yoga for Golf - When Passions Collide

How wonderful to enjoy a morning golfing experience…seeing long sunrise shadows & colorful flowers, feeling morning dew on your golf shoes, noticing towering trees and weeping willows, and hearing the sound of morning birds…all while playing a round of golf!!!  It’s easy to understand why the game itself is often times secondary to simply being outside and “one” with nature.

Yoga and Golf

Golf requires all of the same prerequisites that comprise a good yoga practice; namely strength, flexibility, balance, breath, mental focus, stamina, confidence, and determination (to improve).

Golf ability level can increase with an improvement in fitness.   It’s all about the similar “journey” of yoga and golf….improving both the practice and the sport in a wonderful intertwined manner.  One practice really does support the other!

Yoga for Golf

Yoga poses we will work on together will help each the following golf requirements.

BALANCE
  • feeling stable & grounded through the bottoms of both feet at address
  • prevents “hip” swaying during the backswing movement
  • benefits proper weight transfer from right foot back to left foot with good hip turn and shoulder rotation
  • keeps shoulders and hips "squared off" as this alignment might be required on the hilly, uneven golf lies

FLEXIBILITY
  • achieves more complete range of motion (ROM) at important golf swing joint articulations
  • lengthens the important muscles used in golf to achieve longer, wider swing planes
  • tight, inflexible muscles result in shorter swings and limit club head speed
  • more flexibility also reduces the risk of injury

STRENGTH
  • muscle strength is achieved by flexing (or resisting against) the intended muscle fibers
  • golf yoga poses use your own body weight as the isometric resistance to build up your muscle strength & endurance
  • stronger bodies will utilize increased power and hip/gluteal muscle strength to increase club head speed for more distance

CORE, POSTURE & BREATH
  • core (abdominals, obliques and back) conditioning and strength are critical requirements for the golfer
  • golf swing flaws can usually be tied back to limitations in the physical body, most of which can be corrected with a stronger core
  • golf posture and breath awareness can help elongate the spine at golf address
  • proper breathing greatly assists in keeping a better tempo in your swing
  • breathing exercises during a round of golf can help after mishits or before making an important putt
